Kotlin Android Development: reliable native applications

Etixio delivers Kotlin Android development for your native applications, integrated with the usage patterns, devices and services of your product. We design, build, publish and maintain the application, including the AI features that are useful to your users.

Understanding the technology

Kotlin & Android in your project.

Kotlin is a language used to build Android applications. It makes it possible to build user journeys integrated with the device’s features and the platform’s conventions. The work also covers the application lifecycle, background processing and exchanges with services.

The strengths for your product

Why choose Kotlin for Android?

Kotlin is the language Google recommends for Android development, and it has put it at the forefront of its documentation and new libraries. It is the natural choice for a native application.

Android’s reference language

New APIs, Jetpack Compose and the official documentation are designed for Kotlin first.

Compatible with Java

Kotlin runs on the JVM and coexists with existing Java code, which makes it possible to modernize an application gradually.

Fewer runtime errors

Explicit handling of null values (null safety) rules out a frequent cause of crashes at compile time.

Concise, readable code

Data classes, extension functions, sealed classes and coroutines make code shorter and easier to review.

Code sharing is possible

Kotlin Multiplatform makes it possible to share business logic with iOS while keeping native interfaces (Jetpack Compose and SwiftUI).

Our scope of work

The work we take on.

Android user journeys

Build screens and manage their state following platform conventions.

Tasks & data

Organize network exchanges, asynchronous processing and local storage.

Compatibility

Define target devices, permissions and pre-distribution checks.

Our Kotlin expertise

The Android stack we master.

Language & interface

Kotlin 2 (coroutines, Flow, sealed classes), Jetpack Compose for declarative interfaces, Material Design 3, XML views for existing applications.

Architecture

MVVM with ViewModel and StateFlow, MVI for unidirectional data flow, Clean Architecture and dependency injection (Hilt).

Android Jetpack

Navigation and deep links, Room for local persistence and its migrations, WorkManager for background tasks with constraints and retries.

Networking & services

Retrofit or Ktor for REST and GraphQL APIs, Firebase (authentication, notifications, analytics, Crashlytics).

Tooling & publishing

Android Studio and its profiling tools, Gradle Kotlin DSL, unit and UI tests, automated publishing via GitHub Actions and Fastlane to the Google Play Console.

Android and AI

AI features in your Android application.

A conversational assistant, natural-language search, reading a photographed document or label, voice input: an Android application can embed AI features that are useful day to day. Some tasks (text recognition, barcodes) can run on the device with ML Kit; calls to large models go through your back end to protect keys, control data and track costs.

We deliver the whole chain — server-side service, integration into the application, error handling and offline mode. See our enterprise AI solutions.

In the field

From technology to real-world use.

In a field application, a user may interrupt data entry, lose the network or deny a permission. We design the states and the saving of information for these situations. Operations sent to the server are tracked until they complete, so that the interface distinguishes a saved action from one that is still pending.

The choices that matter

The choices to examine before building.

Target devices, battery constraints and operating system changes shape the design. We review native libraries, permissions and distribution. A feature that depends on a sensor or a camera is tested on the relevant devices, not only in an emulator. When the application must also exist on iOS, we compare native development with a cross-platform approach such as Flutter.

From work to deliverables

Delivery your team can take over.

The scope of the engagement specifies the components to build or take over and the acceptance criteria. We prepare what is needed to understand the changes, verify them and continue the work.

Frequently asked questions

Kotlin Android development: your questions.

What is Kotlin and why is it Android’s language of choice?

Kotlin is a modern language that runs on the JVM. Google recommends it for Android development and designs its new libraries for it first. It combines concise syntax, safe handling of null values and compatibility with Java.

Kotlin or Java for an Android application?

Kotlin for any new project. Java is still supported by Android, but new APIs and Jetpack Compose are designed for Kotlin. An existing Java application can migrate gradually, as both languages can coexist in the same project.

Jetpack Compose or XML views?

Jetpack Compose for new screens, as it is declarative, more concise and well tooled (previews, animations). XML views remain relevant in an existing application; both can coexist during a migration.

How does Kotlin handle asynchronous code?

With coroutines, which are lighter than threads, and Flow for data streams (StateFlow and SharedFlow for UI state). They are a better alternative to callbacks and RxJava.

How do you manage data in a Kotlin application?

Room for the local database, with migrations and Flow integration; Retrofit or Ktor for exchanges with your REST or GraphQL APIs. We design synchronization so the application remains usable without a network.

What is Kotlin Multiplatform?

Kotlin Multiplatform makes it possible to share Kotlin code — business logic, models, network access — across Android, iOS, the web and desktop, while keeping native interfaces. It is a worthwhile option when you want native apps on both platforms without duplicating all the logic.

How do you publish an Android application?

The application is built with Gradle, signed and then uploaded to the Google Play Console. We use the internal, closed and open testing tracks, then a staged rollout to production, with a continuous integration pipeline.

Can AI features be added to an Android application?

Yes. Some features run on the device (ML Kit), others rely on large models called through your back end. We build both sides, with the security, error handling and cost tracking required in production.

What collaboration models do you offer?

A fixed-price project to design and publish an application, a dedicated team to evolve it over time, or a targeted engagement: performance, migrating from Java to Kotlin, adopting Jetpack Compose.
