Application Modernization: Audit, Scope and Decide Before You Build

Scoping a new product, auditing and modernizing an application that holds back your roadmap, deciding on a rebuild or preparing an AI project: Etixio helps you understand the existing system, compare options and prepare a workable plan. Then we can deliver that plan, without a break in continuity.

For

Leadership and tech teams facing a new product, a legacy system holding them back, a rebuild or an AI project

What you get

A shared map of the system, reasoned options and an ordered delivery roadmap

Format

A clearly bounded scoping or audit engagement, then a review; ongoing technical leadership available

Next step

Delivery by your team or by Etixio, as a fixed-price project or a dedicated team

What we deliver

Clarify the choices that shape what comes next.

Structure a new project

A product idea has to become a set of priority use cases, business rules and interfaces. We separate what is essential for a first release from the features that can wait. Scoping also examines data, integrations and operational constraints.

Understand an existing system that holds back change

Recurring incidents, lengthening lead times or heavy reliance on a few people can have different causes. We examine the code, deployments, tests and how knowledge is organized before proposing a rewrite or a targeted fix.

Prepare an architecture or a migration

We compare scenarios, taking into account service continuity, available skills and dependencies. Migration steps, data migration and rollback options are part of the plan, just like the target architecture.

The signals to watch

When should you scope or modernize an application?

Before committing a development budget

A product idea, a request for proposals or a request from leadership needs to become a scope, priorities and a reasoned estimate. See IT project scoping.

When every change costs more than the last

Recurring incidents, regressions, dreaded deployments, outdated dependencies or knowledge concentrated in one person are signs of a system that needs examining.

Before a rebuild or a migration

Rewriting, migrating gradually, changing hosting or framework are major decisions. They deserve compared scenarios rather than gut feeling.

Before scaling an AI project

A promising AI POC must be assessed on its data, security, operating costs and integration with the information system before it is rolled out more widely.

Application modernization

Modernize without interrupting the product.

We favor step-by-step modernization, which addresses weak points while continuing to ship new features. Each step has a verifiable goal and a rollback option.

Version upgrades and dependencies

Frameworks, languages, libraries and end-of-life components are updated in an order that limits risk, with tests on critical user journeys.

Decomposition and gradual rework

The most fragile or most heavily used parts are isolated and then reworked one by one, while the rest of the application keeps running.

Testing, deployment and operations

Automated tests, continuous integration, containerization and monitoring make releases safer. See our DevOps and cloud offering.

Security

Management of access, secrets and vulnerable dependencies, in connection with a cybersecurity program if needed.

From work to deliverables

A diagnosis, trade-offs and a usable plan.

A shared view of the product

We bring together business journeys, software components and exchanges with other systems. This map makes dependencies visible, along with the areas that need further exploration. Findings are tied to observable evidence.

Reasoned options

For each structuring decision, we set out the problem, the options considered and their consequences: delivery effort, maintenance, operations and impact on users. This lets leadership and technical teams alike understand the trade-offs made.

A delivery path

Actions are ordered by value, risk and prerequisites. You get a first scope, estimation assumptions and criteria to verify the results. The work can then be carried out by your team or by Etixio, without a break in continuity.

The choices that matter

Technical expertise stays anchored in the product.

An audit should not become a list of recommendations detached from the roadmap. We connect findings to the changes you actually need to ship: a new user journey, a partner integration, a change in volume or fewer incidents. A technical weakness is prioritized according to its impact on these objectives.

Technical leadership can also be ongoing: reviewing architecture decisions, supporting technical leads, arbitrating technical debt and tracking risks. The scope specifies which decisions fall to Etixio and which remain with your organization.

Scoping, modernization and AI

AI in scoping and in modernization.

Scoping an AI project. We identify the use cases, data sources, access rights and success criteria, then examine feasibility and operating costs before any development. For an existing POC, the audit lists what is missing for production: authentication, evaluations, monitoring, cost control. See our enterprise AI solutions.

Modernizing with the help of AI. AI assistants make it easier to explore legacy code, document existing behavior and prepare tests before making changes. They remain governed by our reviews and checks, as described in our AI-augmented engineering.

How we work together

Start with the context you have.

You do not need to arrive with a complete requirements document. The difficulties you face, the users involved and upcoming deadlines are enough to open the discussion. We then specify the interviews, documents and access needed to examine the scope.

The scoping or audit engagement is defined before it starts: systems involved, depth of analysis, people to involve and expected deliverables. A debrief session is used to discuss the findings and decide on next steps, without confusing exploration with a commitment to development work that is still unknown.

The delivery that follows can take the form of a fixed-price project on a defined scope, or a dedicated team that carries out the modernization over time.

Frequently asked questions

Scoping and modernization: your questions.

What is the difference between scoping and a technical audit?

Scoping prepares an upcoming project by defining use cases, business rules, integrations, priorities and an estimate. A technical audit examines an existing application — code, deployments, tests, security — to identify its risks and options. The two are often combined before a rebuild.

Should an aging application be completely rewritten?

Rarely as a first choice. A complete rewrite freezes new features and carries high risk. We compare this option with gradual modernization or targeted fixes, taking into account service continuity and budget.

What deliverables do you get at the end of scoping or an audit?

A shared view of the product and its dependencies, reasoned options for each structuring decision and an ordered delivery path, with a first scope, estimation assumptions and verification criteria.

Do you need a requirements document to get started?

No. The difficulties you face, the users involved and upcoming deadlines are enough to open the discussion. The interviews, documents and access required are specified afterwards.

Can you scope an artificial intelligence project?

Yes. We examine the use cases, the availability and quality of data, security constraints, operating costs and integration with the information system. For an existing POC, we list what is missing for a production release.

Can Etixio carry out the work after scoping?

Yes, without a break in continuity, as a fixed-price project or with a dedicated team. The deliverables are also designed so that your team or another provider can use them.

Do you offer ongoing technical guidance?

Yes. Outsourced technical leadership can oversee architecture decisions, support technical leads, arbitrate technical debt and track risks as the roadmap unfolds.
